We LOVE Our Oceans
Come Celebrate World Oceans Day 2021 With Us
“One drop of water helps to swell the ocean… none are too small, too feeble, too poor to be of service. Think of this and act.” —Hannah More

From workout to water to everyday, Free Flow Active is all about sustainable fashion and creating better activewear for us to choose. Activewear that helps the environment. Activewear that helps clean up our oceans.
Because our oceans need our help.
Right now, our world’s beaches are covered in filth, garbage, and waste from our consumption and disregard for the consequences.
Right now, our oceans and the wildlife they support are struggling to survive. By 2050, it’s estimated that they’ll contain more plastic and garbage than fish and wildlife.
Right now, we’re failing ourselves, our families, and our children and grandchildren.
- Each year the ocean provides 70% of the oxygen we all breathe.
- Each year the ocean provides daily protein for 3 billion people.
- Each year we dump 17 billion pounds of plastic into it.
It’s time to create a better, cleaner, healthier legacy for our future, our children, our grandchildren, our homes.
There is hope - enter Emily Ratchford.
She didn’t start out to be an activist. She had no experience with the problems our ocean and shores are facing. She was a working mom from Toronto. She enjoyed yoga, outdoor activities, and was an aspiring yoga teacher.
That was before. Before her fateful trip to Bali. Before she knew what was really going on. Before she saw for herself just how dire the situation really was. Before she started Free Flow Lifestyle.
“In February 2018, I travelled to Bali on a surf and yoga trip with some friends. I was absolutely horrified by the state of many of the beaches that were just completely overtaken by garbage and trash. At one point, there were plastic bags and wrappers and cutlery completing overflooding the surf. It was so gross and heartbreaking. A supposed paradise that was practically destroyed.
“I’d heard a lot about the plastic crisis and how it impacts all of us but, living in Toronto, I’d never seen and experienced how bad it really is first-hand. I’m not a marine biologist or an environmental scientist and my lifelong mission has not been rooted in being more ‘plastic consumption aware’. After seeing up close how bad this is, I deeply believe that we can all do a better job of the choices we make as consumers and how they impact all of us.”
Part of the solution? A beginning.
Spurred by the sheer size of the problem and wanting to find a way to help, Emily dug into the research. She found that half of all the waste in our oceans today is caused by abandoned fishing nets. Commonly known as “ghost nets” they are directly responsible for the loss of over 140k seals, whales and other specie who become entangled in the nets. They’re caught in these floating death traps. Unable to escape, they cannot survive.
Digging further, Emily discovered an organization that recovers these ghost nets and regenerates them into fabric. This fabric can be repurposed in a variety of consumer products. With an extensive career in the apparel industry she naturally thought of her favorite activity – yoga – and the need for a flexible, breathable, lightweight fabric that doesn’t bunch up or get in the way.
And just like that, Free Flow was born. Free Flow - activewear and accessories that is super high performing, dual purposed for the studio or to be worn in the water, ultra-lightweight and easy to travel with. Oh, and it’s also gorgeous.
We can solve this if we work together
There is so much ‘stuff’ that we all buy each day on a regular basis. Most of these products and things we use daily, contributes either directly or indirectly to the worldwide ocean trash crisis.
“I remember thinking that if we can take the regenerated materials and use them for products we are going to buy anyway, we can start to turn the tide on this crisis (I know, it’s a bad pun). I could help create a solution and at the same time have an item that is just as high performing, just as on trend, and just as affordable as you could get anywhere else, or even better.
“Today, Free Flow is in its 3rd full year and we’re more committed than ever. For every item we sell, 5 kg (approximately 11 lbs) of waste is taken from our oceans. That’s 11 pounds of trash that will not end up on our beaches. That’s exciting. That gets me out of bed in the morning.”
